What is Kamagra?

Is it a safe alternative to Viagra?

Kamagra is a branded medication which is produced and marketed in India by Ajanta Pharma.

Kamagra is a medication which is produced as a treatment for erectile dysfunction; erectile dysfunction can be defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection long enough to have sexual intercourse.

Kamagra is sold as a pill, a water-soluble tablet or in an oral jelly form and its active ingredient is sildenafil citrate which is the same as that found in Viagra which is the best known erectile dysfunction medication.

How does Kamagra work?

As mentioned above, sildenafil citrate is the active ingredient in Kamagra; it belongs to a group of medicines known as PDE 5 inhibitors (phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors). If you have erectile dysfunction issues then this group of medication can help with the problem by temporarily increasing the blood flow into the penis when you become sexually excited and so enabling an erection to be achieved.

Is Kamagra better than Viagra?

The question has been asked as to whether Kamagra is better than Viagra.  This is a very difficult question to answer as there are no comparative trials.  In theory, both medications contain the same active ingredient and so should be equally effective.

Is Kamagra licenced in the UK?

Kamagra was not licenced in the UK or EU for marketing and use in these areas. The main issue is that India and other countries do not have the same licencing laws and controls over production standards, ingredients and quality standards as we require here is the UK.

In order for the MHRA, (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) to licence a product, they need to be able to check all aspects of safety of a particular drug and as a result, they have not granted a licence for the sale and marketing of Kamagra in the UK.

Other erectile dysfunction drugs that are not licenced in the UK include:

  • Penegra
  • Valif
  • Lovegra
  • Silagra
  • Caverta
  • Suhagra
  • Eriacta
  • Aurogra
  • Penegra

All the medications above claim to have Sildenafil as their active ingredient but as these products are not subject to regulation in production there is no way to confirm this.

Kamagra - is it safe?

The fact that Kamagra is not licenced in the UK should immediately ring alarm bells in your head. As mentioned above, the MHRA has a strict system of regulation regarding quality and safety standards of a drug that is licenced and the fact that Kamagra is not should make you question its safety.

Kamagra is freely available on the internet without prescription and so this should be another reason the question whether it is safe to purchase it. Here in the UK PDE 5 inhibitors are only available either on prescription or under the supervision of a pharmacist. The reason for this is for the user's safety as these drugs may not be safe for some people to take, those with heart disease, history of stroke, low blood pressure among others.

In addition, there is no knowing what ingredients are in drugs bought on the internet from online pharmacies that are not licenced. If you are buying drugs online it is important to check that they are licenced to legally sell drugs online.

Why use Kamagra rather than Viagra

We have already covered the UK licencing, or lack of it for this medication and the associated risks with ordering an unlicensed product; the main other consideration is cost.

Costs for licenced and unlicenced drugs will vary between online suppliers and will also vary with the quantity and strength of the drug ordered.

For genuine Viagra, the cost for four x 50mg tablets is £29.99

The cost of Kamagra for four x 50mg tablets is £5.40 plus delivery.

As we can see the Kamagra is little more than a third of the cost of Viagra.  However, licenced generic Sildenafil is available for £9.99 for four tablets.

I think from the comparative costs shown above, it would be very irresponsible to risk buying an unlicensed version of medication when there are licenced generic versions available online in the UK.

Alternatives to Kamagra

We have established that there are better and safer alternatives to buying Kamagra.

There are four main PDE 5 inhibitors, one of which is Sildenafil (Viagra. The others are as follows:

  • Tadalafil (Cialis
  • Vardenafil (Levitra)
  • Avanafil (Stendra)

Whilst all of these drugs treat erectile dysfunction they may vary in the length of time they take to have an effect, length of time that they are able to maintain an erection in a man but many men may have preferences for a particular drug. Please see below:

Whilst the brand Kamagra has been heavily marketed worldwide through the internet, it is necessary to be clear on safety facts before making an informed decision on whether to try an alternative medication just because it's cheaper!
