Porn vs. Reality

Thanks to the internet, and especially personal devices, accessing pornography is easier than ever. Gone are the days of surreptitiously buying X-rated films and top-shelf magazines from seedy sex shops – in 2016, Pornhub received 64 million visitors to the site every day. If you’ve been taking in a bit of cheeky pornography, you’re certainly not alone.

It is, however, important to recognize that pornography is a form of entertainment. And just like Hollywood movies, real life is far removed from what happens on set. We’ve extracted data from Jon Millward’s study of 10,000 porn stars to help give you a reality check on the parts of porn that don’t match up with reality. Read on for the facts that will keep your participation in the horizontal hustle happy and healthy.

When it comes to the average woman, height, hair colour and ethnicity overlap, but age and weight demonstrate major differences. The average woman in reality is approximately 15 years older and 50 pounds heavier than the average porn actress. Porn stars tend to have hourglass figures, with small waists and proportional hips and chest; the typical American woman is more pear-shaped, featuring curvier hips and slimmer upper bodies.

Most interesting is the disparity in bra sizes. While the ‘blonde-hair, big-boob’ stereotype of porn actresses persists, the typical porn star is brunette and actually has the same bra size as the average woman of 20 years ago. In reality, the average bra size is a 34DD today, compared to 34B in 1992.

Muscles and lean figures feature a lot in porn, with the typical porn actor sporting the desirable inverted triangle shape – broad shoulders and a tapered waist. In reality, most men have a rectangular figure, featuring a flat torso and minor change in shape.

Both men and women should avoid comparing their bodies to a porn star’s. Like models, they are paid to look a certain way. Women may go for the Adonis figure in porn, but the truth is that nothing is sexier than being comfortable in your own skin.

For every three men who perform in porn, there are seven women. According to Millward’s study, there is a small number of male porn actors. In fact, 96 percent of the most prolific porn stars of all time are men. This is likely due to difference in career longevity. A male porn star – provided he can ‘perform’ – will continue being hired for films much further into his career than most women. Women tend to stay in the industry for an average of six to 18 months.

When we looked at appearances, we noticed that porn depicts almost three times as many blondes than there are in the general population. Brunettes, on the other hand, are less common in porn than in reality. Perhaps this is to play up to the stereotype of blondes having more fun.

When it comes to ethnicity, Caucasian women are slightly overrepresented in pornography; meanwhile, there are fewer Latina women in porn films than in the real world. Black and Asian women’s representation in pornography follows closely to their numbers in reality.

Tattoos and piercings were once relegated to fringes of Western society; now, body modifications have gone mainstream. People use them to show their individuality or belonging to a group, or as a form of artistic expression. Approximately the same percentage of male porn stars and average men have tattoos and piercings. Almost twice as many female porn stars have tattoos and piercings than women in the general population.

When it comes to first names, male porn actors use everyday, run-of-the-mill names. John and Michael overlap with the top five names in reality. For women, biblical and royal names are among the most popular (e.g. Mary, Elizabeth) in the real world, while porn actresses prefer more contemporary first names.

In reality, the most common last name is Smith but in porn, it’s Lee. Surprisingly, Johnson – the second most popular surname in reality – didn’t make the list of the top surnames for male porn stars. Female porn actresses tend to use objects and concepts for their stage names – Star, Fox, Rose, and Love.

When it comes to the roles women play in porn, the ‘naughty nurse’ is among the most common. While they didn’t make the list of the top three jobs in porn, teachers and secretaries are also commonly fetishized in porn. This does little dispel the sexualization of jobs held by women, making it a challenge for real nurses, teachers, and secretaries to be treated as serious professionals.

The things women do in porn may bear a resemblance to what women do in real life, but the sex is often unrealistic. For example, while 62 percent of women in porn do anal sex, only 37 percent of women in reality do it.

While women in porn appear raring to go, the reality is that at least 83.2 per cent of women need clitoral stimulation to achieve climax, which is probably why receiving oral sex is the second most popular sex act among women in reality.

What’s most interesting about this data is that almost none of the top sex acts among women in porn and women in reality overlap. Real women prefer giving oral to trying bondage and wearing sexy lingerie to getting spanked. The reality is that some women will enjoy more fringe sex acts and others won’t, but pornography is not the standard. The key is to do what feels good for the individual you’re rolling around in bed with.
