Sexual Exposure & STI Risk Calculator

This tool is for anyone wishing to discover exactly how many people they have been indirectly sexually exposed to using the generic theory of six degrees of separation. You may have come across similar calculators in the past, so we have added on an interactive feature for you to also find out your potential risk of getting some of the most common sexually transmitted infections based on your locality. Simply enter the number of people you have had sexual intercourse with and your best guess of the total number of partners all of them might have had.

THE BACKGROUND

The indirect sexual contact was derived based on 6 degrees of separation and exponentiation arithmetic. This was followed by gathering extensive statistical data for each sexually transmitted infection for every country from reliable sources such as World Health Organisation (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government websites. We used this gathered data to derive coefficients for all countries and each sexually transmitted infection in relation to their population to calculate the probability of you being infected with any of the eight common infections.

SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION

Most people are probably familiar with this term from John Guare’s play from the 90’s, but “six degrees of separation” is actually a theory originally introduced by Frigyes Karinthy in 1929. “Sex degrees of separation” is the simple idea that everyone is six or fewer steps away from any other person in the world. So a simple chain of connection connects any two people in a maximum of six steps.

LIMITATIONS

We carried out extensive research to gather accurate statistics for four of the most common sexually transmitted infections, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis and Trichomoniasis alongside other common STDs like the Herpes virus, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), HIV and Hepatitis B. However, there was limitation on the accuracy of statistics for some countries and a lack of information for others from trustworthy sources. This interactive widget is not a diagnostic tool but simply highlights your potential indirect sexual partners and the risk of contracting STIs based on the theory of six degrees of separation and the co-efficients derived from our STD data.
