About

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection. It's more common in teenagers and young adults and it is passed on during sexual contact. It is not harmful in the short term but if it is not treated it can lead to long term complications.

What is gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is a common sexually transmitted infection which is passed on during sexual contact. If left untreated it can cause problems with fertility.

How do you catch chlamydia?

You can catch chlamydia by having unprotected sexual contact with an infected partner. This includes vaginal, oral and anal sex.

How do you catch gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is passed on during unprotected sex with a partner who is infected. It can be caught during vaginal, anal or oral sex.

Who should get tested?

Anybody who has had unprotected sex with a new partner should get tested. It's recommended to get tested every time you change partners. Sexually transmitted infections do not always cause symptoms so getting tested is the only way to know for sure if you have one or not.

When is the best time to get tested?

If you think you have been exposed to a sexually transmitted infection you should wait two weeks after having unprotected sex to get tested. The infection may not be detected in the first couple of weeks so this ensures that your results will be accurate.

How does this test kit work?

The test kit contains a swab test for women and a urine test for men. After collecting your samples, place them in the return packaging provided to send them to our lab. The samples will be examined for both chlamydia and gonorrhoea and you will receive a text message within three days with your results.

How to use the test kit

When your test kit arrives, carefully read the instructions before beginning. For men, you will be given a urine test. Wash your hands before beginning and squeeze the sides of the collection box to expand it. When you're ready, pee into the box to gather the first half of your urine stream. After you're finished, carefully pour into the sample tube and screw the lid on. Fasten the label with your completed details before placing it in the return packaging.

To use the swab test, carefully unwrap the device after washing your hands. Remove the pink cap, ensuring you do not touch the cotton tip, holding it at the bottom. Get into a comfortable position and insert the device into the vagina until the white wings touch the labia. Push the plunger inwards just like you would with a tampon applicator, until you hear a click. Rotate it five times before gently removing it and pulling the plunger back down until the cotton tip disappears into the tube. Ensure the label is filled in with your details and attached to the tube before putting it into the return packaging.

How do I get my test results?

Your test results will be delivered via text message within three days of your samples arriving at our lab.

How accurate is this test?

The test is highly accurate, using the same technology as the NHS. Ensure you follow the instructions carefully and make sure the samples do not touch anything.

What should I do if I get a positive test result?

If your test comes back positive then we will prescribe you with the appropriate treatment to clear up the infection. This will be a course of antibiotics which is usually taken as one dose or it may be spread out over seven days. You will also need to inform any current or recent sexual partners that you have tested positive for an STI as they will also need to get tested and treated. Avoid sexual contact until both yours and your partner's infection has been treated otherwise you risk reinfecting each other.
