Chlamydia Test (Female)

Information for Chlamydia Test This test is for men and women. We find urine samples are more accurate for men and swab samples for women. You will be sent a kit with the appropriate items required to collect the sample based on your gender. This test kit allows you to collect your own urine or swab sample at home and then send it to our laboratory for analysis. The test is highly accurate and is analysed using the same technology used for NHS and GP blood tests. Your tests results will be available within 2-3 days of the sample reaching the lab. You will receive a text message with the result and instructions on if any further action is required.

What does this kit test for?

This kit tests for chlamydia, a common sexually transmitted infection. It is a swab test so it is particularly suitable for women.

Symptoms of chlamydia

70% of women do not experience any symptoms so chlamydia often goes undetected for a long time. In the event that you do get symptoms they will include any of the following: bleeding between periods or after sex, discomfort during urination, pain during or after sex and an unusual discharge from the vagina. You may also experience lower abdominal pain.

Who should take this test?

This test should be taken by anyone who has engaged in unprotected vaginal sex.

How does the test kit work?

Using the swabs, you collect samples from the vagina. Once you have completed the test, you send your samples on to our laboratory. There, your swab is examined to determine whether or not the chlamydia infection is present. This test will only check for chlamydia in the vagina, to check for oral or anal chlamydia you will need to use a different test kit.

How to use the test kit

This self test requires you to take a swab sample from inside the vagina. To do this, carefully remove the swab from the packet with clean hands, ensuring you do not touch the cotton swab. Hold the middle of the stick and slowly insert the swab into the vagina, around 5cm past the entrance. Rotate the swab to ensure it touches the walls of the vagina and remove it after 10-30 seconds. It should then be placed in the liquid filled tube, taking care not to spill any. Break off the swab stick at the dented part and seal the tube before placing it inside the return packaging.

How will I find out my results?

After you send in your samples, you will receive your results by email or text.

How reliable is the test kit?

Provided you follow the instructions included, ensure that the swab does not get contaminated and all of the liquid remains intact, the test is highly accurate. If your test arrives open or damaged in any way, do not use it. Let us know as soon as possible and we will send you a new one free of charge.

Treatment Options

How to avoid chlamydia

Chlamydia can be avoided by using condoms during sex. You should always use protection with a new partner and it’s advised that you both get tested for STIs before you stop using condoms.

What should I do if I get a positive result?

If your results are positive then you will be given an antibiotic to treat chlamydia. It is also your responsibility to let any previous partners and your current or most recent sexual partner know that you have tested positive for chlamydia. They will also need to be tested for the infection and treated if necessary.

How do you catch chlamydia?

Chlamydia is passed on during sexual contact via the genital fluids. You can catch it by having unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with a partner who has chlamydia.

Is this test confidential?

The test is confidential and your details will not be shared with anyone. We always dispatch test kits in plain discreet packaging with no indication of what's inside.

Will anyone be able to tell what’s inside the package?

No, the test comes in plain, unmarked packaging with no indication of the contents.

Is this test suitable for men who have sex with men?

This particular test is designed for use inside the vagina so it’s only suitable for women. A separate test is available for men to provide a urine sample.

Is the test the same for men and women?

Women will get a swab test for use inside the vagina whereas men will provide a urine sample. You can get the male Chlamydia test here.

Can this be used to test for other forms of chlamydia?

No, this test only contains a vaginal swab. Seperate test kits are available for oral and anal use and a urine test is given for men.
