About

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by the bacteria chlamydia trachomatis.

How do you catch chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It can be transmitted through oral, vaginal or anal sex, and can also be passed from a mother to her baby during childbirth.

Who should get tested?

If you are sexually active and under the age of 25, it is recommended that you get tested for chlamydia at least once a year. You should also get tested whenever you change sexual partner.

How does this test kit work?

Chlamydia test kits are different for men and women. The women’s test requires a swab from the inside of the vagna, while the men’s requires a urine sample. Swabs and samples are sent to a laboratory where they are tested for the presence of chlamydia. A different test is required to check for oral or anal chlamydia.

How to use the test kit

Before taking a test, you should wash your hands thoroughly. Women should carefully remove the swab from the packet and insert it gently into the vagina. Aim to insert the swab around 5 cm into the vagina, which should not hurt. Rotate the stick carefully around the vagina, ensuring that it touches the walls, and remove it after 10 to 30 seconds. Place the swab head-down into the liquid-filled tube and snap the stick along the indented line. Seal the tube and place it inside the return packaging.

Men will need to provide a urine sample. Unscrew the cap of the container and hold it under the stream of urine once you start urinating, collecting your sample mid-stream. When the container is full and you have finished urinating, screw the lid on tightly and place it in the return packaging.

How do I get my test results?

When you submit your sample for testing, you will be able to select a method of contact and provide an email address, postal address or UK mobile number.

How accurate is this test?

Chlamydia tests are highly accurate if the instructions are followed closely. Before use, check to make sure the test kit for any signs of damage.

Symptoms

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?

Chlamydia is among the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK. It usually presents no symptoms and can be easily spread without knowledge, so it is important to go for regular sexual health checkups if you are sexually active. You can also purchase home tests for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and herpes. If symptoms of chlamydia do develop, they can include:

  • A burning sensation while urinating
  • Unusual discharge from the vagina, penis or rectum
  • Pain and swelling in the testicles
  • In women, abdominal pain, bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods

Treatment

Will chlamydia go away on its own?

Chlamydia will not go away without treatment, as your body cannot get rid of the infection on its own. As soon as Chlamydia is detected, it is treated with a course of antibiotics.

How is chlamydia treated?

Usually, Chlamydia can be easily treated with a course of antibiotics. You may be prescribed a single dose of Azithromycin, or a 7-day course of Doxycycline.

Is chlamydia curable?

Chlamydia is completely curable if treated early with antibiotics.

What should I do if I get a positive test result?

If you receive a positive result for your chlamydia test, you will be given a prescription for an antibiotic to treat the infection. It is your responsibility to contact all previous sexual partners since your last negative STI test and inform them that you have tested positive for chlamydia, as they will need to be tested and treated as well.

What other STI test kits are available?

There are a range of take-home STI test kits available from Dr Felix. Because they often show no symptoms, chlamydia and gonorrhea can be tested for by one kit, which is available for genital, oral and anal testing.  Alternatively, you can purchase an extended STI test kit, which tests for 7 different STIs, including genital chlamydia and gonorrhoea, herpes, mycoplasma, trichomonas, ureaplasma, and gardnerella vaginalis. The MSM Basic STI test kit and MSM comprehensive STI test kit are specifically designed for men who have sex with men, with the comprehensive test kit checking for several less common STIs.

Q&A

Is this test suitable for men who have sex with men?

The male chlamydia test kit is suitable for men who have sex with men. There are also more extensive STI test kits designed specifically for men who have sex with men, who are statistically at greater risk of contracting an STI.

Can you contract chlamydia by any other means that sex?

It cannot be passed on by kissing, and it is unclear about whether it can be passed between women during sex. However, it can be caught by sharing sex toys with an infected individual. Chlamydia can also be passed on from a pregnant mother to her baby during childbirth.
