About

What is Cialis?

Cialis is a prescription treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). It contains the active ingredient tadalafil, which is a type of drug known as a PDE-5 inhibitor. It works by widening the arteries and improving blood flow to the penis.

How effective is Cialis?

Cialis has been shown to be up to 81% effective at improving erections in men with ED. Viagra is cited as being up to 84% effective, however Cialis has a longer duration of action.

How to get an erection when taking Cialis?

Peak effectiveness of Cialis occurs around 2 hours after you take it. It won’t give you an instant erection, instead, it helps your body to produce an erection when you feel sexually aroused. Therefore, you will still need sexual stimulation to obtain an erection after taking Cialis.

Ingredients

Active ingredients

Tadalafil is the active ingredient contained in Cialis.

Inactive ingredients

The other ingredients in Cialis are: lactose monohydrate, croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium laurilsulfate, magnesium stearate, triacetin, titanium dioxide (E171), hypromellose and iron oxide yellow (E172)

Dosage

How to start Cialis?

You can start to take Cialis at any time. It is recommended that you take Cialis at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. Cialis reaches its peak effectiveness approximately two hours after taking it. You should always take the dose which you have been prescribed and you should not exceed one tablet per day.

How to take Cialis?

You should take Cialis at least 30 minutes before you expect to have sex. The tablet should be swallowed whole with some water. You may take it with or without food.

Cialis dosage

The typical starting dose of Cialis is 10mg once a day. Cialis should be taken at least 30 minutes prior to sexual activity. If this does not work for you, this may be increased to 20mg by your doctor. If you have tried Cialis and you find it isn’t working for you, you may be best trying a different ED medication. Your doctor should be able to advise you on which medication to try next.

Cialis can also be taken at a low dose every day. This may suit men who have difficulty planning medication around when they want to have sex or men who prefer to have more spontaneous sex. The typical dose of Cialis when taken daily in this way is 2.5mg per day, which can be increased to 5mg per day if this dose is not effective.

Can Cialis be crushed/split?

Cialis tablets should not be crushed or split. If you have difficulties swallowing tablets, you may want to try Levitra which is available in an orodispersible form.

Can Cialis be taken with food?

Cialis can be taken with some water and may be taken with or without food. The rate of absorption is not affected by food.

Cialis and heavy machinery/driving

Taking Cialis can cause dizziness or it may affect your vision so you should avoid driving and operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.

Nitrates and Cialis

Cialis has some drug interactions like most medicine and must not be taken with any form of nitrate medication such as GTN and nicorandil. “Poppers”, often used recreationally to enhance sexual activity should never be taken alongside Cialis.

Can I drink alcohol when taking Cialis?

Both alcohol and Cialis can lower your blood pressure so you should avoid excessive drinking. Drinking alcohol may also affect your ability to get an erection.

Treatment Options

Cialis vs. Cialis Daily

Cialis is typically prescribed for occasional use, before sexual activity. However, Cialis can also be taken as a low daily dose, which can help men who want to have more spontaneous, rather than planned sex. Always take Cialis as prescribed by your doctor.

Cialis vs Tadalafil

Tadalafil is the generic name of the medicine contained in Cialis. Cialis is the brand name of tadalafil.

Cialis vs Levitra and Viagra

Levitra and Viagra are two other medications to help erectile dysfunction. They all work in a similar way, but Levitra and Viagra last for 4–6 hours in contrast to Cialis, which lasts for up to 36 hours. Underlying health conditions and other medications may affect each drug differently. Your doctor will prescribe you the most suitable treatment for you.

Cialis and psychological ED

If your erectile dysfunction is caused by a medical issue or physical impairment, then Cialis is likely to provide a great deal of help. However, if the root cause is psychological, taking medication may mask the problem. Often difficulty gaining an erection is due to anxiety. Being willing to confront what these anxieties are and discussing them with your partner may help you to feel relaxed in sexual situations.

Lifestyle changes to make when taking Cialis

Reducing stress and anxiety can improve erectile dysfunction. Chronic stress has a significant impact on your body, so taking the time to learn how to manage stress and practise self-care can help. Talking to your partner about any sexual anxieties is also a healthy step to take. A healthy diet, exercise, losing weight and cutting down on alcohol and smoking are all things that help.

Q&A

Can I take Cialis regularly?

Cialis 10mg and 20mg are taken on an ‘as needed’ basis, at least 30 minutes before sex and should not be taken for daily use. If you prefer to take Cialis on a daily basis, you should opt for Cialis 2.5mg or 5mg dosages, which are more suitable for this purpose.

Do I need a prescription for Cialis?

Yes, Cialis is licensed by the MHRA (the UK regulator for medicine) as a prescription-only medicine. This means only a registered GP can prescribe Cialis tablets and a registered pharmacist can dispense the medicine. You can see your regular GP to request tadalafil (Cialis) tablets or use an online doctor & pharmacy service like Dr Felix to safely order Cialis online. Our doctors assess your online form and if suitable, will issue a prescription. Our UK NHS pharmacy will dispense the medication and dispatch your treatment in plain and discreet packaging.

Is Cialis a cure?

Cialis is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction but it is not designed to cure the underlying cause.

Will Cialis give me an erection for hours?

Cialis gives you erection assistance for 36 hours but you will only get an erection if you are sexually stimulated within this time period.

Why doesn't Cialis work for me?

Cialis doesn’t work for everyone, but many men find that they need to try it a few times before finding out how to make it work for them. Remember, the medication will only work if you feel aroused and are stimulated sexually during foreplay. Cialis can take up to two hours to have its peak effect, so you might like to try taking it 1–2 hours before sex to see if it works more effectively this way. It’s also worth trying it on several different occasions over a period of a few weeks.

Can Cialis lower blood pressure?

Cialis can lower your blood pressure. If you are taking medication for high blood pressure, then Cialis can increase the effects of it. You should let your doctor know before you start taking it if you have any problems with your blood pressure.

Can Cialis treat enlarged prostate?

Yes, Cialis can be used to treat an enlarged prostate. It helps to relieve the symptoms by relaxing the muscle in both the prostate and bladder, easing difficulties in urinating. If you’re worried you have an enlarged prostate, it’s important to see your doctor who may perform an examination.

Can Cialis cause headaches? Are they dangerous?

Headaches are a common side effect of taking Cialis. They are not generally dangerous, but if you have a history of migraines, low or high blood pressure, or heart disease, you should inform your doctor. If headaches are combined with dizziness and feeling faint, this can be a sign of low blood pressure.
