What is included in the test kit?

The test kit includes oral and rectal swabs, a urine test and finger prick test. These test for the following sexually transmitted infections: HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, chlamydia of the genitals, throat and anus and gonorrhea of the genitals, throat and anus. There will be instructions on how to use each one and secure return packaging to send your samples to our lab.

What does the kit test for?

The comprehensive STI testing kit will test for the following sexually transmitted infections: HIV, syphilis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, oral, anal and genital chlamydia and oral, anal and genital gonorrhea.

How to use the test kit

Before starting, take the time to read through the instructions provided to ensure you collect samples correctly and hygienically. For each sample vial you will need to fill out the form provided and attach the completed sticker to the container so that your test can be processed correctly.

To use the urine test, begin by washing your hands. Squeeze the sides of the urine collection box to open and expand it. When you are ready, use this to collect the beginning of your urine stream, emptying the rest into the toilet. With care, pour the urine into the plastic container and seal the lid shut. Place the sample into the sealed bag provided.

For the oral swab, unscrew the lid of the container to pull out the swab, taking care not to touch the end of it. Place it into your mouth and ensure you swill it around the key areas: the tonsils, uvula and posterior wall. Once you have done this, place the swab back into the container and seal the lid shut.

To use the anal swab, wash your hands before you begin and try to relax into a comfortable position. Unscrew the lid of the container to pull out the swab and gently insert it into the tip of the anus. Rotate it slightly as you remove it, placing it carefully back into the container and sealing the lid shut.    Before using the finger prick test, ensure your hands are clean and dry, using the antibacterial wipe provided to clean the skin before beginning. The blood sample should be taken from the third or fourth finger of your less dominant hand. It's also easier if your hands are warm. Next, remove one of the lancets from the bag, twisting and removing the blue stick. Place the lancet against the rounded tip of your finger and press it into the skin to activate it. After puncturing the skin, wipe away the first drop of blood. Then hold your finger over the collection container and massage the finger to release enough drops of blood to fill it up to the visible line. Place a plaster onto your finger and seal the container.

How does the test work?

The comprehensive STI testing kit provides you with everything needed to test for a wide variety of sexually transmitted infections. The test is delivered to you, providing instructions on how to use it. After you have completed the test, place your samples into the secure return packaging, ensuring they are labelled correctly and send them to our lab. When they arrive, they will be examined accordingly and your results will be sent out to you.

How reliable is the test kit?

The at home testing kit uses the same technology as the NHS to test for sexually transmitted infections. It is very reliable provided the instructions are followed carefully and the samples collected are not compromised in any way. If your testing kit arrives damaged then let us know right away so we can replace it for you. You should also do this if you drop one of the testing swabs or spill any of the sample vials.

Symptoms of STIs

Some STIs are more likely to produce symptoms than others so it's not always possible to know if you have one. It's recommended to get tested after having unprotected sex with a new partner or if you have had intercourse of any kind with an infected partner. Gonorrhea produces symptoms such as a yellow or green discharge from the penis, a burning sensation while urinating and a rash on the penis. The symptoms of chlamydia are similar but the discharge is white or clear in colour. The first sign of HIV is usually a weakened immune system, making it harder than usual for the body to fight off infection. Syphilis has different stages, the first being a non-itchy sore appearing on the infected area. After a few weeks the sore disappears and you will experience tiredness, headaches, a non-itchy rash and swollen lymph glands. Hepatitis is an infection of the liver and can be passed on during sexual contact. It does not usually produce symptoms but it is possible to experience tiredness, jaundice, abdominal pain and fever-like symptoms.

How will I find out my results?

Your results will be sent to you by text message within 2-3 days. If you did not provide a phone number then they will be emailed to you.

Why is this test particularly suitable for men who have sex with men?

This testing kit provides a more comprehensive STI check, beyond the most common types of sexually transmitted infections. It is particularly suitable for men who have sex with men as it tests for STIs which are transmitted during oral and anal sex.

Is the test confidential?

The test is confidential and your results will not be shared with anyone without your consent.

Will anyone be able to tell what’s inside the package?

The at home testing kit is designed to be as discreet as possible. It will arrive in plain, unmarked packaging so no-one will be able to tell what is inside the package or where it is from.

Is the test the same for men and women?

The test is different for men and women. Where men are required to submit a urine sample, women provide a vaginal swab. This test has been designed specifically for men who have sex with men.
