How do home test kits work?

The test kit is requested through our website. This contains everything you need to safely collect a sample. You then send the sample to our laboratory for analysis using the FREE return postage provided.

Typically, the test will require a urine or blood sample or a genital or oral swab. However, unique instructions for your specific test will be enclosed in your package. The test kit will include everything you need for collecting the sample with detailed instructions including visual aids. After taking and securing the sample, you’ll place it inside the return packaging included with the test kit and mail it to our NHS-accredited partner lab.

How reliable are home test kits?

Home STI testing kits are highly accurate and of comparable reliability to those performed by a healthcare professional when performed correctly. For maximum reliability, you should follow the instructions exactly and ship your sample as soon as possible. No test is 100% accurate, but you can be confident in the results from most tests if taken correctly. However, some tests will only provide a positive result if you have symptoms (e.g. genital herpes) and some infections have an incubation period during which the infection is less likely to be picked up on a test (e.g. chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV).

If you have concerns about the reliability of any result you have received, you should speak with your doctor.

When will I get my results?

Depending on which test you choose, results are usually available within 3–7 days. However, some test kits may take longer to provide results.  We’ll email to let you know when the test results are ready and if any further action is required e.g. contacting your GP for treatment or partner notification.

Treatment

What should I do if I test positive?

We offer prescription antibiotics for chlamydia and genital herpes

If you test positive for an STI, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible to discuss the next steps. You may be asked to take another in-clinic test to confirm the positive result prior to treatment.

We offer effective treatment with prescription antibiotics for chlamydia and genital herpes. Treatments are delivered to you in plain packaging, just like the test kits. The treatments are prescribed by a UK registered doctor and your medicine will be dispatched from our NHS community pharmacy.

We no longer offer treatment for gonorrhoea as due to antibiotic resistance issues, the most effective treatment requires an injection administered by a healthcare professional.

It is your responsibility to contact all previous sexual partners since your last negative STI test and inform them that you’ve tested positive for an STI.

Q&A

How are the tests packaged?

All test kits are shipped in a neutral, plain packaging that is discreet and confidential. Nobody other than yourself will be able to tell what’s inside.

Can I take an STI test if I am on my period?

Yes. Most STI tests can still be carried out if you are on your period and will still be highly accurate.
