Zineryt is a topical lotion which is applied to the skin to treat acne. It contains both zinc and an antibiotic called erythromycin.
Zineryt works by killing the bacteria which cause acne, reducing inflammation of the skin, stopping new spots from forming and allowing the skin to heal. As a mineral, zinc contains properties which work to heal the skin. This combines with the antibiotic to absorb into the skin and create a powerful healing agent.
Zineryt will take several months to work and have a noticeable effect on your skin. It's important to keep using it everyday even if you don't notice an improvement right away.
Zineryt contains the antibiotic Erythromycin alongside zinc. The two ingredients combine to have an active effect against acne.
Zineryt can be used on the face, back or chest. It should be applied to all areas affected by acne.
Zineryt it suitable to treat moderate acne. If you only have a few pimples, blackheads or whiteheads, then over-the-counter treatment should be sufficient to treat them. If you have a lot of spots and inflammation then Zineryt can be an effective treatment. Severe acne which includes cysts and hard lumps underneath the skin, known as nodules, may need stronger treatment. You GP will be able to prescribe you with Isotretinoin tablets or a combination of different treatments.
The active ingredients in Zineryt are Erythromycin and zinc acetate.
The other ingredients in the medication are di-isopropyl sebacate and ethanol.
Wash and dry your face before applying Zineryt. When you are ready, unscrew the protective cap and hold the bottle upside down to dispense the correct amount into the applicator pad. Dab the applicator pad all over the affected area of the skin (the whole face, not just the areas with acne). This should be done twice a day for the duration of your treatment.
Each bottle of Zineryt contains 40ml of erythromycin and 12ml of zinc acetate. It should be used twice daily.
Zineryt should be used for a minimum of 10-12 weeks. Always use it for the length of time prescribed by your doctor. Stopping the treatment early may cause your symptoms to return.
If you forget to use Zineryt, apply it as soon as you can, leaving at least three hours before your next application. It's important to use it consistently to get the full benefit of the treatment.
If you use too much Zineryt, blot off the excess lotion with a cloth or tissue. Using the applicator correctly should prevent you from using too much.
Zineryt can cause temporary redness or a stinging sensation. If you experience any of the following stop using Zineryt right away and tell your doctor:
A red scaly rash with blisters and bumps under the skin
An allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling and difficulty breathing)
A painful rash or burning sensation which does not go away
Do not use Zineryt if:
You are allergic to any of the ingredients
You are allergic to any antibiotics belonging to the macrolide group
Tell your doctor if you are using any other medications, particularly other antibiotic treatments.
Zineryt is suitable to use during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor for advice before using the treatment.
You can use Zineryt while breastfeeding but always consult your doctor first.
Moderate to severe acne will need prescription medication to treat it properly. This may include:
Topical retinoids (such as tretinoin)
Topical antibiotics (Clindamycin or erythromycin)
Azelaic acid (Azelex or Finacea Gel)
The combined contraceptive pill
Benzoyl peroxide (such as Acnecide)
Combination treatments which contain both antibiotics and retinoids or benzoyl peroxide also work well. For example Duac, Epiduo or Differin Gel.
You may wish to try home remedies to help tackle acne. Ingredients which have good antibacterial properties include:
Apple cider vinegar
Tea tree oil
It's not always possible to prevent acne as it is predominantly caused by hormonal changes or imbalances in the body. There are steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of spots or irritation from continuing to form. These include:
Establishing a good skincare routine- cleansing twice daily
Avoiding harsh skincare products which contain additional fragrance, alcohol or chemical substances
Avoid squeezing or picking spots as this can lead to permanent scarring
Moisturise dry skin
You can still wear makeup while using Zineryt. Ensure that the lotion has dried before applying any cosmetics.
Adult acne is common and it is caused by hormonal changes in the body. This can include menstruation, pregnancy, menopause or hormonal imbalances.
Zineryt cannot treat existing acne scars but it can help to stop new ones from forming.
Zineryt is only available on prescription and cannot be purchased over the counter.
